As we begin our Fall Training Series, I have been reflecting on the multitude of training programs I have attended in my career. You can find a training program (or YouTube video) on absolutely anything. The question is, “What do you do with the information once you receive it?” In the professional world, we value the concept of continuing education and it is reflected in our requirements of employees in our organizations attending trainings and workshops. You know the drill, go to the training, get your certificate, submit your certificate to HR and get the check in the continuing education box.
What would happen if training and continuing education became less about getting your certificate and more about thinking outside the box by actually using the information? That is exactly why we at Catalyst design trainings the way we do and always end with an action plan. We want you to take all the strategies, discussions and activities and do something with them. Our training is just the beginning of what we hope is a revolution in nonprofits across Indianapolis to try new things, engage new groups in our efforts, and change the world. I see the eyes rolling now; you really think a training can change the world? Isn’t that a little dramatic?
I do know that we need to think of new ways of doing business to address 21st century challenges. I do know that when people use what they learn in our trainings, get creative, and put them into action big things can happen. We have had groups start recycling programs, begin planning a leadership development program for young professionals and get inspired to finally reach for the stars and start a new program. It is all about creating clear pathways between ideas and action.
