The word “Engage” can be heard all over the city, whether you are having coffee with a colleague or meeting in a conference room. Why has this word seemed to become the buzz word of today? We have even used it to market our Fall Training Series. I think that this city is searching and hoping for action.
In a time where you can’t escape from people’s thoughts and opinions on blogs, Facebook, Twitter, news media, etc, we are not short of ideas and passions to change the things we don’t like. However, we have this constant challenge with action. We want everyone to know what we think about the latest social issue or budget cut; however, very few step up to the plate and actually “Engage” with meaningful change.
Don’t get me wrong, there are thousands of dedicated individuals and groups that are putting their passion into action everyday, but it is going to take all of us getting in the game to make Indianapolis the truly wonderful city we know it can be. A recent list named Indianapolis one of the 20 worst cities to live. I don’t know about you, but I am tired of groups putting the city I love on the bottom of the list. Let’s show the country and the world how engagement can make a city a thriving place to live.
I think this quote from Thomas Jefferson fully captures what we all are trying to say when we utter the word “Engage.”
Do you want to know who you are? Don’t ask. Act! Action will delineate and define you.
It is up to you and I to make “Engage” more than a buzz word that fizzles out when the next new thing comes along. Let Indy be a true example to cities around the country what the word really means.
